About Root-bound

Foggy road on Douglas Island.

Root-bound is a long novel, at over 1100 pages and around 450,000 words. I originally wrote it as one book in four parts, not realizing how massive it would become. Once I finished the first draft, the idea of releasing it as one novel seemed crazy, so I considered dividing it into two, three, or four books to make it easier.

However, it was written as one book, and because of that, there are no natural breaks except at the end of each part, and those do not stand alone. You can't read one and have a satisfying ending to the story. So, what was originally one book in four parts remains one book in four parts.

Writing the book took over a decade, from when I started it in December of 2011 to its release in February of 2025. During those years, it underwent two significant rewrites, character cuts, character transformations, weeding out of unneeded scenes and wordy narrative, and the addition of a secondary storyline. However, all the major elements remained the same from day one until now. The overall story and the struggles the characters face have not changed in that time.

After so many years and revisions, Root-bound is finally the way it was meant to be. I hope you enjoy it.
